The last installment in Jason Rhoades’ ‘Pussy Trilogy’– after ‘Meccatuna’ (2003) and ‘My Madinah: in pursuit of my ermitage…’ (2004)– the present catalogue documents Rhoades’, ‘Black Pussy Soiree Cabaret Macrame’, held in the artist's Los Angeles studio in 2006.
‘Black Pussy Soiree Cabaret Macrame’ sprawls roughly 3,000 square feet, dominated by an empty stage bearing a neon sign which reads "Live in the Black Pussy”. The installation features another 185 neon signs displaying synonyms for female genitalia and large metal storage racks covered with assembled found objects. The racks contain hundreds of Egyptian Hookah pipes from a seized shipping container, over 350 unique Dream Catchers (a traditional Native American fetish object used to filter dreams), 89 beaver-felt cowboy hats, 72 Chinese Scholar stones, Venetian glass vegetables (and Chinese knock-offs), colorful cloth rugs, a homemade aluminum replica of Jeff Koons' famous stainless steel Rabbit (1986), and more. To one side, a large macramé textile object covers the wall.
Rhoades’ ‘Black Pussy’ installation began with ‘The Black Pussy... and the Pagan Idol Workshop’ at Hauser & Wirth London (2005) and traveled to David Zwirner after Rhoades’ death in 2007.
