Arguably the most important exhibition catalog of the period, the concept was originally intended as an adjunct to the Marcel Duchamp retrospective organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York but did not materialize. Recognizing the necessity of illustrating Duchamp's influence on succeeding generations of artists, Assistant Curator Anne Rorimer of the Art Institute was tasked with building this exhibition to coincide with the Chicago showing of Duchamp's work and his revolutionary ideas.
