Ice (1967) is a genre-defying novel by the British writer Anna Kavan. Ice was the last work published before Kavan’s death, the first novel to land her mainstream success, and remains her best-known. Ice is a small and innovative novel, recognized as a major work of science fiction.
Ice is set during an apocalypse in which a massive ice shelf, caused by nuclear war, is quickly engulfing the earth. The narrative is hallucinatory and fragmented. The male protagonist, and narrator, spends the novel feverishly pursuing a young, nameless woman, contemplating the overwhelming feelings he has for her. These are worsened by the deteriorating atmosphere around them. The ever-growing sheets of ice consume the landscape, underscoring the collapse of societal structures and the inescapable dominance of natural forces.
